Comments & Mentions

Collaborate in real time with comments and @mentions inside incident threads.

Each incident in Upstat includes a built-in comment thread so your team can coordinate, share updates, and ask questions—all in one place. You can also mention teammates to notify them and bring them into the conversation.

Comment Thread

The comment thread appears in the right-hand incident panel or the dedicated incident page, depending on the view you’re in.

You can use it to:

  • Share investigation updates
  • Ask for help or clarification
  • Drop links to logs, dashboards, or runbooks
  • Record decisions or handoffs

Comment Features

  • Markdown Support — Format text with headings, lists, links, and code blocks
  • Timestamps — Each comment is timestamped and ordered chronologically
  • Real-Time Sync — Comments post immediately to all users with the incident open

Mentions

You can @mention a teammate by typing @ followed by their name. A dropdown will show available users.

Mentioning someone:

  • Sends them a notification
  • Adds them as a participant in the incident if they weren’t already
  • Makes it easier to loop in help from people outside the core response team

Mentions work across all roles and notify users even if they aren’t watching the incident yet.

Who Can Comment

Anyone with access to the project can post comments on incidents, regardless of role. Comments are visible to all participants and viewers of the incident.

When to Use Comments

  • To replace backchannel conversations happening in Slack or DMs
  • To keep a shared, auditable record of what’s happened
  • To keep late joiners or stakeholders up to speed
  • As a lightweight alternative to full incident timeline updates

Summary

  • Every incident includes a rich, real-time comment thread
  • Comments support Markdown, mentions, and system event visibility
  • Mentions notify users and add them to the participant list
  • Use comments to centralize response collaboration inside the platform
