Scheduling Maintenance

Communicate planned maintenance clearly by scheduling future status events.

Planned maintenance windows allow you to notify customers and stakeholders about upcoming service-impacting work. In Upstat, these are represented as scheduled status page events with a defined start and end time, optional linked entities, and customizable messaging.

Creating a Maintenance Event

To schedule maintenance:

  1. Go to Status Pages → Maintenance
  2. Click New Maintenance Event
  3. Fill out the following fields:
    • Title – The summary of the maintenance event
    • Start and End Time – Defines when the maintenance begins and ends
    • Status Impact – Choose the impact level (e.g., Partial, Major)
    • Catalog Entities – Select affected services (optional)
    • Description – Provide details about the planned work
    • Notify Subscribers – Enable to send alerts to those subscribed to this page

Once scheduled, the event will appear on the public status page and automatically activate at the start time.

Updating Maintenance Events

While the event is ongoing or scheduled, you can:

  • Edit the description or timing
  • Change the severity or impact level
  • Post updates as the maintenance progresses
  • Mark the event as Completed early if it finishes ahead of schedule

These updates are visible on the status page and sent to subscribers if enabled.

Subscriber Notifications

If notifications are enabled:

  • Subscribers will be notified when the maintenance event begins
  • Any updates posted during the event will also trigger a notification
  • A final update will be sent when the maintenance is marked as completed

This keeps your users informed throughout the process.

Best Practices

  • Schedule maintenance in advance whenever possible
  • Keep descriptions clear, including what services may be degraded or offline
  • Use updates to explain progress and expected completion
  • Close the event promptly when work is complete

This helps minimize confusion and maintain trust with your users.

Summary

  • Planned maintenance is scheduled as a time-based status event
  • You control timing, messaging, and affected entities
  • Subscribers can be notified before, during, and after the event
  • Events can be updated or resolved early as needed
